The name itself refers to the grassy, bald knob hilltops found around the Ozark Mountains. At the summits of hills in the area there are bald, treeless, grassy spaces. As history reveals, a group dedicated to protecting life and property, aiding law enforcement officials in the apprehension of criminals, opposing corruption in local government held their secret meetings atop a “bald” mountaintop (for a better look-out for spies), so the public began to refer to them as the Bald Knobbers.

The name was adopted by Branson’s first family in entertainment, the Mabe family. They presented the first live music show in 1959. The Baldknobbers Theatre was among the first to be built on 76 Country Boulevard in 1968, followed by new theaters and music stars that helped turn Branson into a major tourist attraction and the Baldknobbers Jamboree is touted as the show that started it all.

The family delivers friendly, non-stop comedy and entertainment. There is great musical talent showcased by various 2nd and 3rd generation Mabes. A big part of the continuing legacy is Tim Mabe (Droopy Drawers Jr.) and his insanely funny comedy routine with Hargus. And, Brandon Mabe, who is not only the emcee of the show, but with an awesome voice delivers great country solos and performs impressive duets with Megan McCombs. Denton Mabe with some cool country and Brent Mabe as guitarist and musical director add extra depth to an already over-talented family.

Some other enjoyable parts of the show included Patty Mabe (Mom) with that traditional “lady of country” voice, Mike Ito, the yodeling Japanese cowboy, Nathan Agdeppa with my special favorite, La Bamba, and Hargus (Jerl Adams) who transitioned from hilarious comedy to classic country without missing a single beat! The military salute is one of the most in-depth tributes in Branson. EACH branch of the military is celebrated and saluted with its own hymn. Especially beautiful!

Something for everyone. This show is packed in American culture. Maybe that is why the Baldknobbers and Mabe family were honored by the Smithsonian Institute. Actual items from the original 1959 show are displayed for all to enjoy. Wonderful recognition to family and tradition.
